Beat the Heat: Local Resources to Help You Stay Cool
An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect in Jackson County through Thursday, July 7.
According to the National Weather Service, our area will experience dangerously hot conditions, with heat index values up to 108 degrees, from now until Thursday afternoon.
If you need a place to escape the heat or help staying cool, here’s a quick guide to finding hot-weather resources around Jackson County.
- Cooling Centers are air conditioned facilities open for free to the general public during the location’s business hours.
- KC Parks and Rec and Salvation Army community centers
- Mid-Continent Public Library and Kansas City Public Library branches
- RideKC buses and streetcars
- Visit the state’s Cooling Center Map to find more locations near you
- The United Way of Greater Kansas City maintains a directory of seasonal resources all across the county, including cooling centers, free fans and air conditioning units. You can also find homeless shelters and housing assistance that serve the community all year round. Call 211 for help finding resources in your area.
- Get wet at KC Parks and Rec’s free spraygrounds
- Need transportation to a cooling center or shelter located outside of RideKC? OATS Transit offers low-cost rides in Blue Springs, Grain Valley, and Lee’s Summit to those eligible. Call them a day in advance at 816-380-7433 or 1-800-480-6287.
If you know someone who could benefit from these resources, please pass this information on! Everyone deserves to be safe and cool throughout the summer.
