Stay Cool: Tips for a Healthy Summer

Summer is a season of sunshine, exploration, and well-earned downtime for kids and families—but high temperatures and outdoor activities can also bring health risks. Whether you’re planning a family vacation, visiting local parks, or just enjoying a lazy day in the backyard, staying safe in the heat is essential. Here are some simple tips to stay cool and healthy this summer:
Protect Skin and Hydrate
-
Hydrate often. Encourage kids to drink water regularly. Bring reusable water bottles to events, summer camps, and even when you’re running errands around town.
-
Use sunscreen. Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and reapply every couple of hours.
-
Dress smart. Choose lightweight clothing that shades the skin or has built-in sun protection.
Prevent Common Summer Injuries
-
Wear helmets when biking, skateboarding, or scootering.
-
Follow safety rules on playgrounds and at amusement parks.
-
Travel smart: Always buckle up, keep a first aid kit handy, and never leave children or pets in a hot car.
-
Use life jackets during water sports or boating.
Schedule Summer Health Care
-
Make sure your child receives required immunizations before going back to school.
-
Check sex education off your list by signing your teen up for our FREE classes on July 11 or August 8.
-
Schedule a physical exam if your child will be participating in sports/camps later this summer or fall.
Need Help with Cooling or Transportation?
Staying cool in dangerously hot weather can be a challenge—especially without access to air conditioning or reliable transportation. If you or someone you know needs help:
-
Find a cooling center or summer assistance program through United Way 211. Additional air conditioned facilities open for free to the general public during the location’s business hours include:
- KC Parks and Rec and Salvation Army community centers
- Mid-Continent Public Library and Kansas City Public Library branches
-
Get help with transportation to medical appointments or cooling centers with OATS Transit. JCPH also offers complimentary rideshare passes to and from our Lee’s Summit clinic if you are in need of assistance. Email JACOHDcommunityhealth@uhkc.org or call/text (816) 447-0421 for more information.
These resources are available to help our community stay safe and supported throughout the hottest months of the year.
