Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. Common symptoms include high fever, chills, sore throat, cough, and muscle pain.
Flu viruses are detected year-round but are most common in the fall and winter. Flu season timing and duration varies, but activity usually increases in October, peaks between December and February, and can last as late as May.
The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu shot. Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctor’s visits, sick days, and flu-related hospitalizations and death.
