Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs, but can impact other parts of the body.

Symptoms of active TB disease include a persistent cough (with or without blood), chest pain, fatigue, weight loss, fever and night sweats. We also offer TB testing for people who need to complete pre-employment or other onboarding requirements.

TB Testing Information

When you make your appointment, you will notice two separate TB options: TB Skin Test Placement and TB Skin Test Read. If you schedule a TB Skin Test Placement, you MUST return for a TB Skin Test Read appointment within 48-72 hours.

During the first visit, a nurse uses a small needle to put some testing material (known as tuberculin) under the skin on the lower part of your inner arm. During the second visit, a nurse will measure the size of the bump or reaction. A positive or negative test result depends on the size of the bump or reaction.

Jackson County Public Health does not offer testing on Thursdays for this reason.

TB Skin Test Placement appointments cost $25 each, and payment is due at the time of booking. TB Skin Test Read appointment fees are included in this initial cost.

One option is for your employees to schedule and pay for TB tests on their own, before requesting reimbursement from you. Alternatively, we can work with businesses and schools to send invoices for TB tests. If you are interested in invoices, please contact askjcph@uhkc.org and we will connect you to next steps.

Tuberculosis (TB) is spread through the air from person to person when someone with active, untreated TB speaks, sings, sneezes, or coughs. Anyone can get TB, but some people are more at risk than others. Those in high-risk category include people who are close with someone with TB, people with other medical conditions, people who are suffering from homelessness or addiction, and people who live in large care facilities.

If you show signs of TB, you should have a TB skin test. If the test is positive, you will be given other tests to see if you have TB infection or TB disease. JCPH does not provide chest x-rays, but people may qualify through a program established with Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
